Abbotsford

July 30 & 31, 2005

It was off to Abbotsford BC for another great time. The Canadians are great fly ball hosts. We had practiced hard and were ready to compete.

We had our great support/handler crew ready for any challenge. Jon and David handling stats; Deb taking videos; Debbie and Dorothy boxers; Dorothy and Carolyn chefs, Merry for her experienced advice and Tricia’s willingness to fill in and help anywhere needed.

Thanks to my Spo-K9 teammates for the excellent canine telepathy. It again gave us a chance to laugh at our Moms and Dads. It’s sooooo therapeutic!

Now, the good stuff.

 - I had a great shampoo and set and was told how nice I looked and smelled. I was ready to go. Been a long time since my last primping. Spring
 - Good grief, forget all that phony stuff – just show me the lane and get out of the way. Bill
 - Why did we back into that parking lot at the rest area? Buster
 - After a very long day of traveling they asked Dad to lead the last leg of the trip to the Motel. Dad announced that we were 2 blocks away – then 20 miles later he announced that the map was wrong and we were lost. Please don’t ask Dad to lead in the future. Lacy
 - Friday night Chuck, Jon and Jim went to Abbotsford to set up our tents for the weekend. Pandy and I watched Dad visit with other teams while Chuck and Jon with the able help of the ladies from the neighboring site put up our tents. Maggie
 - We arrived at the Motel. Our room overlooked the pool and had two big soft beds. Soon Taylor, Claire and I were dancing on the beds and trying to touch the ceiling. Annie
 - Saturday morning we were ready for racing. Well it did not go as practiced. All the wheels came off the wagon and we looked bad. Holly
 - Holy cow the weather was hot. I decided to ease up and even refuse to run some heats. Then I got benched. Guess I better start running the entire race or my career may be short. Scrappy
 - Finally I got to run the third race – I couldn’t wait. I wanted them to hurry and finish the first two. Finally, it was my turn and my time was great but I passed early. Then I passed early again. And again. I got benched. What do you expect of a young K9 with lots of energy? Annie
 - All the young K9’s, you know the “tough ones,” complained about the heat. I thought the 100+ temps were invigorating. Dexter
 - Just like in practice we ran our first race like a Swiss movement – we swept the race. Eddi
 - All the black K9’s suffered with the heat. Maybe their next trip to the beauty shop should include color change to bleached blonde like me. Pandy
 - Thanks for the hair cut. It helped with the heat and produced an interesting outcome at the measuring ceremony. Lacy
 - I was running well then I heard somebody say that we should stop if we heard a whistle. I did and I sure caught heck – guess I didn’t understand exactly what they meant. Annie
 - I ran my heart out until about mid afternoon then I had to take a break. Thanks Annie for starting our team and letting me get some time in the shade. It felt so so good. Holly
 - The rest in the car with air conditioning was great. I was able to resume running after that break. I am going to ask Mom to get us an air conditioner for the tent. Rani
 - Did you hear Mom scream as she pinched her bottom under the seat in the Honey Hut? Maggie
 - Kathy was in my way as I started to rerun and I ran directly into her shin. I thought that I had hit a brick wall. When I finally got my bearings again I saw her sitting on the ground holding her leg. Glad that we both were able to continue. Spring
 - What happened to my turn? Bill
 - I was sure glad that I was called on to run clean up for the team later in the day. I had great times – maybe the best in my young career. Parker
 - What is the deal with the glue and tape on my foot? It’s very embarrassing for a Golden fly ball veteran and champion like me to show up to race with all that crap on my foot. Eddi
 - Good thing somebody thought about hats. Dad still launches me – says OH NO and now grabs his hat. At best he can no longer pull on his sparse hair. Pandy
 - After three early passes and Taylor hurrying to rerun me I decided to return – turn around - and be ready to go. However that was a bad idea when running first. Upon return I started to turn around and BANG, Rani t-boned me. I thought a big truck had run over me. Annie
 - I sure hope Randy understood all of my advice on politics, analytical computer engineering and Barbie’s. He seemed to be least interested in one topic – you guess which one. I like him. Claire
 - Mom forgot to charge the camera. What will Jim watch for hours and hours next week? Parker
 - Merry, did you notice how nice I was this weekend? Pandy
 - Thanks Eddi for sharing the starting position with me this weekend, I really enjoyed running first. It’s not as easy as it looks. I hope that with more practice I will be as good as you and can help the team when you want to rest. Maggie
 - With Mom running Spring maybe Randy will run me and we could travel as a foursome. If he will run me I promise to be easy to catch – most of the time. Bill
 - I loved the chance to start. Thanks for the tips Holly. Maybe I can help you with tips on passing during our practices. I will try hard to fill your paws when you need to pause. Annie
 - Does anybody have an old fanny pack that Mom can use to minimize the risk of her leaving her purse at restaurants? Holly
 - I sure rocked the boat when I hid Randy’s cell phone deep in the suitcase. It was my contribution for not letting me race. I maybe 10 but I am still a very fast dog. Bill
 - Did you hear Chuck and Dad talking about getting Debbie and Mom pink cowgirl hats to wear while box setting? Maggie
 - Good grief Papa, Taylor is 10 and I am almost 1˝ years old. Annie
 - Gee whiz Mom why didn’t you tell us there was thorny ground cactus when you sent us to go potty at the border crossing Sunday? Buster, Annie & Scrappy
 - Did you see Mom lead Jon and Debbie into the speed trap on the way home Monday? The Police stopped them and we kept going. I thought it was a great trick. Dexter
 - Mom got a lead on a Border Jack for Eileen but I don’t know the result. Maggie

It was a great trip. I still can’t believe that the Gliders and the Flyers both took FIRST PLACE in their divisions on Saturday.
And then Sunday both teams chased first place in their division right up through the last race but each had to settle for SECOND PLACE.

Everybody get some rest and start preparing for the Stanwood tournament on Aug 20th & 21st. We must train hard and run smart, as the competition will be tough.

Maggie
